Cardiology Visit Types Explained: Consultation, Records Review, and Second Opinion

The right care pathway depends on your specific question, the records already available, and whether you need a real time conversation. A service selection process can help you identify the encounter type currently available and the information a cardiology professional will need.

A live consultation

In a synchronous consultation, patient and clinician communicate at the same time, usually through a secure video visit. A short appointment may be suitable for a focused question or follow up; a longer appointment may be appropriate for multiple concerns, extensive history or complex shared decision making. The actual service scope, scheduling, fees and duration are determined by the current booking pathway.

An asynchronous records review

An asynchronous review is conducted using records supplied through an approved secure process and generally does not require a live conversation at the time of review. The deliverable, scope, timing and need for additional information depend on the defined service. Reviewing records may support an initial assessment, a focused consultation question, or a second opinion, depending on the request.

What makes a second opinion different?

A second opinion requests another qualified clinician to independently assess an existing diagnosis, test interpretation, or proposed care plan. The patient already has a prior evaluation or recommendation that needs review. A consultation addresses a clinical question or evaluates a concern and may be the first specialist assessment. Some consultations occur after earlier care, so the reason for the request and the work actually performed determine whether it is a second opinion.

The right questions to prepare

What decision am I trying to make? Have I already received a diagnosis or treatment recommendation? Do I need a detailed independent assessment of previous findings? Do I want real time dialogue? Which existing records answer my question? What result or written deliverable should I expect?

What happens before a request?

The secure service chooser shows the current selection options and applicable instructions. Confirm price and visit terms there before committing to a paid service. Submit health information only through an approved secure channel, and ask how the practice will provide results or follow up.

Safety and next steps

For potential emergencies such as severe chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, new stroke symptoms or collapse, seek emergency medical evaluation promptly. Planned virtual cardiology services are arranged through the secure appointment pathway.
