Heart Health After Cancer Treatment: When a Cardio Oncology Consultation Can Help
Cancer treatment can change cardiovascular risk and monitoring needs during treatment and in survivorship. Preventive cardio-oncology is a specialized area of cardiology focused on assessing, reducing, and managing these risks while coordinating with your oncology and primary care teams.
A consultation may be valuable if you have received anthracyclines, HER2-directed therapies, chest radiation, or other treatments associated with cardiovascular considerations; if you have hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol concerns, or prior heart disease; or if you have questions about a previous echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, or monitoring plan.
What patients receive: individualized review of cancer therapy history when available, cardiovascular medical history and risk factors, pertinent prior imaging and laboratory findings, and a discussion of appropriate follow up, prevention, and care coordination. Any imaging or tests ordered through independent facilities may have separate charges.
The 2022 European Society of Cardiology cardio-oncology guideline provides a clinical framework for cardiovascular management before, during, and after cancer treatment. Individual decisions depend on exposure, symptoms, baseline risk, and clinical findings.
