Atrielle: A Holistic Preventive Cardio-Oncology Wellness Program

Introduction & Program Overview

Name & Mission

Atrielle is a holistic preventive cardio-oncology wellness program designed to support Black women breast cancer survivors who are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. The name "Atrielle" combines "Atrium," referring to the heart's upper chamber, and "Elle," a feminine suffix, symbolizing strength, resilience, and divine protection. This program integrates medical expertise, innovative technology, and culturally sensitive approaches to promote heart health and overall well-being.

Atrielle aims to empower Black women breast cancer survivors to reclaim their health, overcome systemic and personal barriers, and create sustainable lifestyle changes that prevent and manage heart disease.

Understanding Health Disparities in Black Women

Black women in the United States face a disproportionately high burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Factors contributing to this disparity include systemic disadvantages from discrimination, exclusion from health trials, inequities in access to health care resources, and social determinants of health. These systemic issues lead to higher rates of hypertension, stroke, heart failure, and coronary artery disease among Black women.

Additionally, the "Superwoman Schema," characterized by an obligation to manifest strength, suppress emotions, resist vulnerability, and succeed despite limited resources, has been identified as a phenomenon influencing African American women's experiences and reports of stress. While this resilience is admirable, it can contribute to adverse health outcomes, including mental health challenges and increased stress levels.

Atrielle addresses these multifaceted challenges by integrating education, movement, community support, and mindfulness to counteract the harmful effects of systemic stressors and promote holistic well-being.

Exclusive Program Access & Value Proposition

Atrielle is exclusively offered to designated clinical sites with a protected referral network to ensure uninterrupted access and sustainability.

The program is built on four pillars of care:

  1. Patient Care: Providing timely, evidence-based cardiovascular consults tailored for oncology patients.

  2. Education: Enhancing knowledge through self-paced learning modules focusing on cardiovascular health, exercise, and stress management.

  3. Community Engagement: Strengthening healthcare partnerships, patient outreach, and advocacy to build a supportive network.

  4. Research: Conducting studies on cardio-oncology risk, behavioral health, and digital health solutions to inform and improve care practices.

Service Description & Workflow

Referral & Record Submission

  • Consultation Initiation: Clinicians can initiate consults through a secure portal embedded within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, streamlining the referral process.

  • Secure Data Transmission: Patient records are submitted electronically, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with health information regulations.

Consultation & Report Generation

  • Specialist Review: Cardio-oncology experts analyze patient cases using advanced, evidence-based assessment tools to provide accurate risk evaluations.

  • Comprehensive Reporting: Detailed reports are generated within 1–2 business days, offering clear, actionable recommendations for patient care.

Notification & Integration

  • Automated Alerts: Healthcare providers receive notifications upon the completion of consults, facilitating timely follow-up.

  • EHR Integration: Reports are seamlessly incorporated into the patient's electronic health record, ensuring accessibility and continuity of care.

Integration Models & Professional Services Agreement (PSA)

Integration Options

  • Secure Portal Model: In this model, Atrielle processes consultations through an external secure portal. Healthcare providers initiate consults via this portal, and upon completion, reports are manually uploaded into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system of the referring site. This approach offers a straightforward implementation with minimal disruption to existing workflows.

  • Direct EHR Integration: This model involves seamless integration between Atrielle's system and the referring site's EHR. Consultations are initiated within the EHR, and reports are automatically incorporated upon completion. This option enhances efficiency and reduces administrative tasks but may require more extensive initial setup and coordination between IT departments.

Mindfulness & Emotional Health: Heart Beach Garden & Lyrical Mezzanine

Atrielle recognizes the importance of mental and emotional well-being in cardiovascular health. To support this, the program offers two innovative platforms:

  • Heart Beach Garden: This conceptual, online, and virtual space is designed to offer a serene environment for meditation and mindfulness practices. Participants can engage in guided sessions that focus on relaxation, stress reduction, and emotional clarity. While Heart Beach Garden is not currently a physical location, it serves as a virtual sanctuary where individuals can retreat to rejuvenate their minds and spirits. Future plans include developing a corresponding physical setting that embodies the tranquility and essence of Heart Beach Garden, providing a tangible space for community gatherings and personal reflection.

  • Lyrical Mezzanine: This platform offers an online and virtual community that fosters creativity and expression to support mindfulness and joy. Through music-based therapy, guided visualization exercises, and artistic workshops, participants can explore various forms of self-expression that promote emotional healing and mental clarity. Lyrical Mezzanine encourages both virtual interactions and in-person community gatherings, allowing participants to connect, share experiences, and build supportive networks.

  • Each participant receives a Heart Beach Garden/Lyrical Mezzanine Mug as a tangible reminder to incorporate moments of peace and mindfulness into their daily routine. This simple tool serves to encourage regular practice of mindfulness techniques, which have been shown to reduce stress and improve overall quality of life. Studies indicate that African American cancer survivors are receptive to interventions incorporating mindfulness, meditation, and other mind-body practices, highlighting the importance of culturally appropriate and accessible programs.

Gratitude Journaling and the My Heart Spark Notebook

  • Incorporating gratitude journaling into daily routines can significantly impact mental and emotional health. Atrielle provides each participant with a hard copy of the My Heart Spark Notebook, along with an optional Gratitude Journal designed to facilitate this practice.

    • Structured Prompts: The journal, if selected, includes guided prompts that encourage self-reflection, helping survivors shift focus from self-sacrifice to self-care.

    • Stress Reduction: Engaging in regular gratitude journaling has been associated with decreased levels of stress and anxiety, contributing to improved heart health and overall well-being.

    • Empowerment Through Reflection: By acknowledging and appreciating positive aspects of their lives, participants can cultivate a sense of empowerment and resilience, aiding in their recovery and long-term health maintenance.

Virtual Reality Exercise & Digital Wellness

  • Physical activity is a cornerstone of cardiovascular health, yet traditional exercise programs may not address the unique needs and preferences of Black women breast cancer survivors. Atrielle addresses this gap by offering Virtual Reality (VR) Exercise Coaching as part of its digital wellness initiatives.

    • Engaging and Personalized Workouts: VR technology provides immersive exercise experiences that can be tailored to individual fitness levels and preferences. This approach enhances motivation and adherence to regular physical activity routines.

    • Cultural Relevance: Incorporating culturally relevant themes and music into VR exercise sessions can make physical activity more enjoyable and meaningful for participants.

    • Accessibility: VR exercise programs can be accessed from the comfort of participants' homes, reducing barriers related to transportation and scheduling.

  • Research indicates that virtual reality-based interventions can improve the emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being of breast cancer survivors.
